Beacon

PROWL Studio teamed up with Baukunst, a new collective of creative technologists, to curate BEACON, a pop-up exhibition that took place on July 27, 2023 at Pier 70. The event reframed the future of sustainability with an optimistic twist through contributions from 12 San Francisco-based brands.

"Climate change is one of our generation's most pressing cultural challenges, and to overcome it, we must design inspirational products, not just better technology," Baukunst explains. "We invest in creative technologists who build solutions that can meet the moment and scale. For BEACON, we selected twelve exhibitors who are at the cutting edge of material science, product design, and systems-level solutions — from carbon-negative protein sources (FYTO) to electric RV's (Lightship) — all while holding design as a key principle."

Process

Bringing together a diverse audience of investors, designers, founders, technologists, and entrepreneurs, BEACON offered a much-needed platform to explore how the intersection of science, design, and technology is setting the stage for a material revolution. The exhibition showcased 12 interdisciplinary innovations that point to an optimistic future for our planet.

✺ Anthro Energy - building batteries that power the next generation of electronic devices

✺ BluumBio - harnessing natural enzymes to remove industrial chemicals from our environment

✺ FYTO - using automation to positively impact our global food systems in agriculture and beyond

✺ Intropic Materials - combining protein performance with stabilization to address plastic waste

✺ Lightship - reimagining the recreational vehicle experience for the electric age

✺ Maa'va - replacing concrete for the next generation of green building materials

✺ Mango Materials - leading the bio-manufacturing revolution through biodegradable materials

✺ Mill - all-inclusive food-recycling products and services

✺ Orange Charger - accessible, affordable, and convenient EV charging for the masses

✺ OurCarbon - carbon-negative material additives and pigments from organic waste

✺ Sway - harnessing the power of seaweed to create home compostable plastic packaging

✺ unspun - tackling fashion's waste problem with the first 3D weaving technology for apparel

The Event

BEACON was installed on the first floor of Pier 70's Building 12, a forthcoming hub for San Francisco's creative community. Once an abandoned building frequented by urban explorers in the Dogpatch with a rich history as one of the West Coast's most productive steel manufacturing plants during WWII, the building is a keystone of the neighborhood's revitalization. BEACON was one of the first events to offer a unique peek inside the expansive industrial space.
