ByBorre - 'Exposure Therapy'

Destruction and regeneration go hand-in-hand in the aftermath of a wildfire, and so too, can meaningful change arise from our global climate crisis. With this message at the core, we created a collection of seating elements that consider alternative ways to meet our desires as consumers while inspiring hope for optimism. Titled ‘Exposure Therapy’, the collection challenges the conventional upholstery methods that leave cut waste scraps and barriers to repair using laser cut and bent stainless steel construction dressed with textiles that can be easily removed, washed, and even reversed to change the color of the piece entirely.

Process

PROWL collaborated closely with Amsterdam-based BYBORRE and their team of highly-skilled knit experts to create circular, comfortable lounge pieces that don’t require the use of conventional foam while telling a story about the California wildfires, abstracted and expressed through texture. BYBORRE’s circular knitting machines combine methodologies of digital pattern marketing with knitting.

In total, seven iterations of the material were produced from recycled polyester yarns found in recycled clothes, resulting in the final three-quarters of an inch thick in two reversible variations.

This collection of lounge furniture debuted at Milan Design Week 2022 at Alcova in an exhibition by the same name, which staged an immersive display that transported visitors through a journey, starting at the height of a raging California wildfire then transitioning to a world in which the charred Earth has regenerated and healed itself, with the use of biomaterial props and an abstract animation by Brendi Wedinger.
